Baguio City, Philippines – Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution and prioritize safety in using fireworks after a minor was injured following the explosion of a prohibited pyrotechnic device or noisemaker in Lower Dagsian, Baguio City, on the evening of December 21, 2025.

The victim, an 11-year-old boy, was rushed to the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center after sustaining injuries from an illegal firecracker identified as a “5-Star,” a banned explosive known for its high blast power and unpredictable fuse, and one that has been repeatedly linked to serious hand injuries, especially among children.

According to the Baguio City Public Information Office (PIO), the victim sustained first-degree burns on his right thumb and partial nail avulsions on several fingers of his right hand. He was treated with anti-tetanus serum and has since been discharged.

Another firecracker-related incident was reported in Irisan, where a 12-year-old boy sustained blast and burn injuries to his hands and arms after being injured by another illegal firecracker. Both cases highlight the continued use of dangerous fireworks in residential neighborhoods even before the New Year celebrations.

The two incidents prompted officials to warn the public about the use, sale, and possession of illegal fireworks, particularly by minors.

Under Baguio City Ordinance No. 144, series of 1951, as amended by Ordinance No. 53, series of 2009, the sale, explosion, and use of firecrackers and fireworks within city limits are prohibited, except when authorized through a written permit issued by the city mayor for special occasions.

Authorities urged parents, guardians, and barangay officials to remain vigilant and to immediately report the sale or possession of illegal fireworks, stressing that preventing children’s access to prohibited explosives is key to avoiding further injuries as the holiday season approaches.
