Itogon, Benguet – Small-scale miners and community members demonstrated the bayanihan spirit in Poblacion, Itogon, as they built a temporary footbridge at Goldfield, a site affected by a landslide.

The footbridge that was finally completed on August 23 was made of bamboo.

According to Board Member Alexander Fianza, the effort was led by Franklin Carantes, president of the small-scale miners in Poblacion, together with Councilor Albert Carantes Jr., Brgy. Kagawads Fred Jacinto and Boogy Man, and several other volunteers who spent much of their time finishing the work.

Fianza, according to the DZWT 540 AM -Radyo Totoo, explained that the footbridge was constructed to ensure the safe passage of students, teachers, and residents travelling to and from Poblacion and Goldfield.

The provincial legislator also mentioned that the elders and barangay officials will monitor the structure, particularly during rainy weather, to ensure it stays safe for the community.

The initiative arose after DepEd-Cordillera Regional Director and OIC SDS Estela Leon-Cariño requested prompt measures to ensure a safer path for students and educators after her recent visit to the said location.

It can be recalled that the landslide at Goldfield occurred on July 30, severely affecting daily travel, leaving the locals struggling to cross the area.

Through bayanihan, the miners and local residents demonstrated once again that solidarity and collaboration can provide answers to difficulties, especially in times of need.
