Tabuk City, Kalinga—More than one thousand college students in Kalinga are benefiting from educational assistance from the provincial government, under the leadership of Governor James Edduba.
This was disclosed by Local Youth Development Officer I Johnny Dona-al, in an interview, saying there are a total of 1,281 college students in the province who are currently being provided P5,000 each by the PLGU per semester.
Of the total number of scholars, 929 are enrolled in private schools and 352 in public schools within the province.
Requirements needed to apply for the PLGU scholarship
According to Dona-al, while the beneficiaries of the PLGU scholarship program do not require high grades to pass the screening, a student must not fail 3 consecutive subjects in a semester, and they are mandated to participate in community services of the provincial government such as tree planting and clean-up drives.
“There is no required passing grade for them to qualify as long as they will not fail 3 consecutive subjects within the semester,” said Dona-al.
The minimum requirement for the scholarship application is a biodata with an attached 2x2 ID picture, 2 photocopies of valid ID, 2 copies of the latest grades, 2 copies of the certificate of indigency, and 2 copies of the assessment from the school or college they enrolled at. The documents will be submitted to the Local Youth Development Office, located at the Provincial Capitol in Bulanao, Tabuk City.
Dona-al said they will be accommodating 800 students this year.
Board Member Kitongan pushed for the increase of the educational aid Board Member Kitongan recently pushed for the increase of the amount being given to the beneficiaries through amendment of the Provincial Ordinance No. 2023-018.
Kitongan said his committee started looking into the possibility of increasing the P5,000 aid to P7,000 to provide adequate support and to lessen the burden that comes from inflation and additional school fees.
Talking to Guru Press, Kitongan said that as the chairman of the Committee on Education, he is doing everything to help the students to pursue their education.
Kitongan then urged the student beneficiaries to do their part in studying well, looking for a part-time job and not just relying on the scholarship, and considering the money being given to them for its intended purpose.
“ We are doing everything to help them. Ammok nga bassit lang gatad ti maaw-awat da ngem I hope nga usaren da koma para lang diay kailangan da eskwelaan. Haan da lang koma umasasa lattan diay maawawat da, ag part time da metlang koma,” Kitongan added.
