Balbalan, Kalinga – Balbalan’s majestic Christmas tree decked out with multi-colored lights and topped with a star was lit up Friday night, marking the commencement of the eagerly anticipated festive season.

As the Christmas tree came to life in a dazzling display of lights during the ceremony, Vice Mayor Rowina Alison Damian stressed the reason for the celebration as she talked to hundreds of audiences.

More than the festive decorations and family gatherings, the essence of the event, she said, can be found in the meaningful Bible verses of Matthew 2:10 and Luke 2:10.

Damian explained the first passage which reads, “When they saw the star, they were overjoyed,” saying the journey of the three wise men in finding Jesus was guided by a miraculous star. And, “… indeed, it is exciting. It is a time of rejoicing when they saw the light thus, this celebration,” she added.

The true meaning of the festivity is also emphasized in the book of Luke which serves as a reminder that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus who brings salvation to all.

“We must all rejoice as we prepare [for] the coming of Jesus Christ. He is the reason for the season. Let us take that light which is God’s wonderful gift to us, our guide to the path towards Jesus. So, I hope that this activity is not only because our kids want to meet or our kids want to have prizes, but we want to share the joy because our savior is coming,” said Damian.

Part of the Vice Mayor’s statement is an expression of gratitude to all those who worked to ensure the activity’s success and those who actively participated in the grand event.

She concluded her message by encouraging those who were not able to win the contested activities this year to try again until they succeed.
