Tinglayan, Kalinga – Aiming to preserve the culture, tradition and history of the Ytinglayan people, the Local Government of Tinglayan through its Culture and the Arts Council is now working on the making of a book regarding the origin of the tribes in the municipality.

The project if it pushes through will be a great help as it will add record to what the municipality already has and would be used to educate younger generations about their roots.

The 7 subtribes in the municipality are the Tongrayans, Futfuts, Sumachers, Fasaos, Chananaos and the Turcaos.

In an interview with Public Information Officer Larae Lactao, she said data gathering of researchers coming from different barangays in the municipality is underway.

“Currently, we have 3 researchers who are from Mallango, Bugnay, and Ambato. We chose researchers who are residents of Tinglayan as they are the ones who could understand the exact words of the elders of each tribe as the information from these elders will serve as our main sources in writing the book,” Lactao said.

Lactao revealed they are still in need of researchers coming from the other aforementioned tribes.

As to the process of data gathering, the information officer said they are to take note of the accounts the elders would share and conduct other means to verify truthfulness of information.

“We cross check with historical findings, see if there are other evidences like pictures. We also check the background of our interviewee. Then if all are proven truth then we use it to make the book,” the information officer explained.

“Titingnan din namin yung kung yung data na nakuha mula sa ating mga elders ay iisa…kung iisa lang ba yung sinasabi nila,” Lactao added.

Researchers are also given instruction to check if the elders are direct witnesses or not and to cross check if what they have shared matches the ones in barangay documents.

They were also asked to follow the guide questions provided.

“As much as possible ket alaen da nga verbatim didjay ibaga ti elders tapnu awan tu mapukaw nga meaning upon translation,” she said.

For their safety, researchers are advised to follow health and safety protocols in doing the gathering of data such as the wearing of facemask and observance of social distancing.

Differences, common and specific traits of each tribe are also among the data which will be gathered by the researchers.

“Each tribe have their own beliefs and culture which, some which are forgotten due to the influence of Western so there’s a need to understand first kung paano sila nammuhay, kung ano pinaniniwalaan nila,” Lactao said.

Data gathering for said pursuit started last week, February 1, 2021.
