Tinglayan, Kalinga – Nearly 200 trekkers and adventurers explored the “tattooed paths” of the Municipality of Tinglayan during the 4th edition of the Lumin-Awa Trek, held from February 5 to 7, 2026.

Participants of this year’s Lumin-Awa Trek came from Kalinga, Bauko, Benguet, Baguio, Cagayan, Davao, and Manila, with the youngest trekker aged 16 and the oldest 64.

The group braved scenic mountain trails and enjoyed the refreshing Palanga-ah Falls and A-atungan Hot Spring, as well as the rice terraces in Sumadel, Dananao, and Tulgao. Beyond the breathtaking landscapes, participants were also given a glimpse into the local way of life and the rich cultural heritage of Tinglayan’s communities.

Throughout the three-day event, trekkers were treated to indigenous dishes prepared with fresh, natural ingredients, allowing them to fully experience Tinglayan culture. Among the highlights was toro, a beef delicacy carefully cooked and wrapped in bamboo, served on talupa (banana stem plates) and pajung (bamboo soup utensils). Cultural immersion extended beyond sightseeing and food tasting, as participants sang traditional songs, played the gong, and engaged with community members.

The adventure concluded with a memorable visit to Buscalan Village, where trekkers met the legendary mambabatok, Apo Whang-od. Some visitors also had the opportunity to receive traditional tattoos from the iconic artist.

During the three-day activity, participants were welcomed and accompanied by Tinglayan’s top local officials, Mayor Charles Abay and Vice Mayor Alexander Malasi, along with Municipal Administrator Atty. Mark Dave Bang-as, who personally assisted the visitors and joined them on the trek.

Following the successful event, the Tinglayan local government, led by Mayor Abay, expressed gratitude to everyone who worked tirelessly to make the trek meaningful, memorable, and truly special for all participants.
