Tanudan, Kalinga─ To replace the age old “monkey bridge” which connects Barangay Dacalan to the main motorway, a 2.2 million-peso worth of footbridge is being constructed as one of the Municipality’s means of improving transport and mobilization.

With the construction of concrete footbridge, the residents of barangay Dacalan and nearby barangays will no longer need to hold on to cable wires to cross the river to the other side.

Before the monkey bridge, people braved a hanging bridge made of rattan.

Budget allocation for the bridge

The Office of the Congressman allocated a budget providing a suspension bridge to Dacalan but a flooding incident occurred from Typhoon Rosita in 2018 that resulted to heavy damages to the footbridge leaving only two single cable wires.

Mayor Jaedicke Rhoss Dagadag insisted to work out for the funding. The Municipality, later, was able to make a way to get some budget from the 20% of the development fund share which comes from their Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA).

“Idi ket uwoy (rattan) lang diyay, tapos pinondoan ni congressman idi. Tatta, inyanud ni typhoon Rosita diay hanging bridge nga na-construct isunga ti nabati ket diay duwa nga cable wire na nga isu usaren ti tattao nga bumallasiw,” he narrated.

“Karaman daytoy ti most priority tayo tapnu mayat pagnaan ti taga Dacalan ken dagiti mapan bumisita nga taga Tanudan idiay Dacalan,” he added.

The bridge as gateway to tourist attractions

Said bridge will serve as the roadway of the yTanudan and tourists to numerous tourism destinations which include the Silent Mountain, Matabor, Abaca, Payao, Masinglit, Tarwi-ig, and Atang falls.

According to Tanudan LGU, they are currently building the concrete post as the base of the footbridge and are expecting the completion of the project by the end of this month, May 2021.
