Pasil, Kalinga – Pasil town in Kalinga launched on Wednesday, May 03, the free vaccination drive dubbed “Chikiting Ligtas 2023” to protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, rubella and polio.

Measles, rubella, and polio are highly contagious diseases that can cause serious complications, especially for children. In 2019, around 50,000 measles cases were recorded, of which, 637 died. Four children did not survive "polio-compatible disease” in the same year, the recent data revealed as reported by Health Assistant Secretary Beverly Ho.

This May, the health department in the region targets to immunize a total of 155,991 of those 9 to 59 months old against measles-rubella, and 182,376 of zero to 59 months old against polio, until the end of the month.

Partaking in said campaign, Pasil employees, including the police force led by PCPT Vladimir Bawer, conducted a motorcade from Malucsad to the covered court at the Municipal Hall in Amdalao, said the Municipal Health Office headed by Dr. Aldrin Siwao in a press release.

Participants settled at said venue for the program where Dr. Mara Bucalen, along with Roldan Liwaliw of Provincial Department of Health Office and Dr. Zandra Dupali of Provincial Health Office, presented an overview of the Measles-Rubella and Oral Polio Vaccine (MR-OPV) Supplemental Immunization Activity.

In their talks, Mayor Alfredo “Chao-ig” Malannag Jr. represented by Councilor Eugene Batalao Sr. and Vice Mayor Venancio Magangat expressed their support to the drive.

Dr. Siwao disclosed no cases of measles, rubella and polio were recorded in the municipality from January this year but the public should keep their guard up to maintain such status.

The crucial role of parents and guardians in protecting their children against said diseases through immunization was reiterated by the health personnel and municipal officials.
