Tabuk City, Kalinga – Road accidents involving motorcycles are undeniably alarming in the province. With this, the president of a national and newly inducted rider community is once again reminding all riders to always wear helmet while driving.

“Andaming nasayang na buhay. Buhay pa sana ‘yun kung naka-helmet lang,” this is the sentiment of Moises Baysa Jr., President of Full Spectrum Riders Association of the Philippines(FSRAP) – Kalinga, noting why motorcycles go hand in hand with helmets.

Unlike a 4-wheel vehicle that has structural protection to keep drivers safe in case a road accident happened, a motorcycle rider has only a helmet as protection from possible fatal head injury.

According to WHO Philippines, over 90% of motorcycle deaths involve not wearing a helmet.

“Kasi ti panunutem, once a nag-motor ka, agassawa dagita helmet and motor. Ti panunutem, agpadpada iti katangken na iti semento iti paggapwam ken iti papanam. Iti aksidente it will happen any second isunga nu naipakpak iti ulom, naipakpak iti helmet, isuna iti mang-absorb iti amin, you will still live,” he said.

How to properly use a helmet

Baysa stressed that riders should buy quality helmets with ICC and DOT mark. It may be a bit costly as it ranges from P3,000 and above, but this is nothing compared to the hospitalization an individual has to pay due to severe head injuries and it is nothing compared to the value of their lives.

“Anya ba iti balor iti biyag mo? Kasi nu agusar ka iti for compliance sake lang a helmet, nu naipakpak dayta, nabettak, nabettak met lang iti ulom,” he said.

Another thing to consider is on the way a quality helmet has to be worn. Some, he says, hang their helmets on their elbow or they just simply wear it on their head without securing its chin strap.

“In wearing a helmet, hind lang ‘yung sinuot mo okay na. May chin strap siya parang seat belt din kasi once na gumamit ka ng helmet at hindi ka naka-chin strap, that is good as not wearing a helmet kasi once a nabaligtad ka adda tendency a maikkat diay helmet,” he said.

Additionally, when wearing a helmet, it should be worn full face, he added.

“Aside from nasa batas yan, isipin nila na may pamilyang naghihintay sa kanila. Helmet saves lives. Isunga basta ag-motor, ag-helmet tapnu makaawid da a nasayaat kasi aksidente is just around the corner. Haan dan bumilang iti data, iti numbers iti maikurkur-it iti matmatay iti kalsada,” Baysa appealed.
