Updated: Aug 21, 2023

Sta. Marcela, Apayao – A 25-year-old farmer was arrested Thursday, August 17, in Barangay Marcela, Sta. Marcela for allegedly crashing into a motorcycle that led to the death of a church minister and seriously injuring a 12-year-old kid.

The farmer was then driving his Honda XRM along the barangay road in said area back on March 21, 2021, under the influence of alcohol when the fatal crash happened.

Victims include a 51-year-old man who was riding his Yamaha 115 and his back rider, who happened to be his 12-year-old child.

While traversing the aforementioned road, particularly in a sharp curve portion, the suspect encroached on the lane of the victims and collided with the victim’s vehicle.

Result of the investigation, according to Sta. Marcela Chief of Police, PCpt. Ginabel Dao-inon, further revealed that the suspect was speeding when the incident transpired.

With the crash, the victims sustained serious injuries in various parts of their bodies and were ferried to Sta. Marcela District Hospital.

They were later referred to Far North Luzon General Hospital due to severity of their injuries, where the 51-year-old victim died while being treated.

In an interview, Dao-inon disclosed that both parties agreed to an amicable settlement, but the suspect did not adhere to the agreed terms, thus the victim’s family pursued the case against him.

Actually, sir, this case is nung 2021 pa, nagpursue lang dahil hindi tumupad sa usapan ang suspect," COP Dao-inon told GURU Press Cordillera.

The suspect faces the crime of Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide and Damage to property, with recommended bail amounting to P60,000.

He is now in the custody of Sta. Marcela Police Station for documentation prior to turnover to the court of origin.
