Tinglayan, Kalinga – Despite the rainy and foggy weather, temporary boundary markers were planted on the disputed area between the Betwagan and Butbut tribes this December 16, 2020.

Kalinga Police Provincial Director PCol. Davy Vicente Limmong said that the Philippine National Police, representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, leaders and elders from both tribes, and others hiked to Mt. Iker/Tumuwad in Tinglayan for the ocular inspection.

From there, two prominent points were identified and pointed by both sides as boundaries where they put the temporary markers. Limmong said that there are at least 8 points identified by the DENR, however, the pouring rain and the foggy weather prevented them from going further.

“Daduma gamin ... medyo adayo metlang ta agtudtudo ijay, nagfoggy haan mi makita. So inidentify mi lang ket 2 prominent points nga alleged boundaries on both sides,” he said.

What transpired during the ocular inspection shall be tackled by the regional chiefs of concerned line agencies by next year.

“There’s a lot of issues to be discussed but they have to resolve one issue at a time kuna ni RD [PNP Regional Director]. After resolving the boundary issues, other issues will be tackled such as the alleged mapukpukaw nga animals da being claimed by both sides,” Limmong added.

The Bodong between Betwagan of Sadanga, Mt. Province and Bugnay of Tinglayan was broken in February because of the longstanding boundary dispute. The conflict between these tribes had already taken 1 life and injured 2 this year.
