Tabuk City, Kalinga – In his virtual message during the celebration of the National Indigenous Peoples Day today, August 09, Congressman Allen Jesse Mangaoang encouraged the learning institutions in Kalinga to integrate in their curriculum the indigenous knowledge system.

Mangaoang believes that ‘the academe is one good sector to resuscitate life into our vanishing culture.’

Here’s the full message of Chairman of the House Committee on Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Cultural Communities:

“It is my distinct honor to great all our indigenous brothers and sisters on the celebration of the National Indigenous Peoples Day and International Day of Worlds Indigenous Peoples.

The declaration of a National Indigenous Peoples Day and mandating its meaning for observance highlight the importance of the recognition, protection and promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples through policies, programs, and activities in the national and local level towards inclusive development and genuine indigenous people empowerment.

We have for this year a very cognizant team as it acknowledge the role of indigenous women in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge.

Finally, we have come to our senses with the resounding recognition of the role of indigenous women in the preservation and transmission of our knowledge systems.

Our indigenous knowledge systems on peacebuilding, agriculture, and environmental management have been since time immemorial proven effective in maintaining peace, sustainable agriculture, climate adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk reduction.

Our traditional practices may be archaic in present standards but they are still the formidable anchor that keeps the world in ecological balance as data shows that 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity are taken cared by indigenous peoples.

As we explore ways for the preservation and conceptualization of effective knowledge and culture transfer, I make profound recognition of the initiative of Kalinga State University for integrating in its curriculum the indigenous knowledge system of the yKalingas under its college of Public Administration and Indigenous Governance.

We encourage all our learning institutions to take the same initiative because I believe the academe is one good sector to resuscitate life into our vanishing culture.

Let us continue propagating our culture in the ranks of the present and future generations and we bank on the love, the perseverance and the compassion of indigenous women to sustain the culture transfer.

From your Chairman of the House Committee on Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Cultural Communities, Happy Indigenous Peoples Day. Mabuhay ang katutubong Pilipino!”
