OWWA-CAR grants financial aid to former OFWS, dependents on OFW Family Day in Kalinga

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration-Cordillera awarded financial aid to former Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and dependents during the OFW family day held at Davidson Hotel and Restaurant on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.


One of those given the aid was a former OFW who received P10,000 through the Balik Pinas Hanapbuhay Program, a reintegration program duly created in 2011 to enable women OFW returnees to start and to operate livelihood undertaking for self-employment.


Likewise, three OFW dependents were granted a total amount of P50,000 through the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) and the OFW Dependent Scholarship Program (ODSP).

Dependents of OFWs may receive up to P60,000 under the EDSP, while dependents of active OWWA members enrolled or planning to enrol in any 4-year or 5-year baccalaureate course at any college or university may avail of the p20,000 per year ODSP scholarship grant.


For the school year 2021-2022, based on records of OWWA, around 18 students from Kalinga are beneficiaries of the ODSP.


Aside from the awarding, membership promotion and some updates were also given by Supervising Administrative Officer Mr. Edgar Melchor Laigo. He underscored that membership with the OWWA will ensure that assistance and protection will be given to Filipinos working abroad.


To become a member, he said that applicants need to pay a registration fee amounting to 25 USD or its equivalent in the prevailing foreign exchange rate. Membership classifications, he added, include the active and the inactive ones.

Meantime, Laigo reported that they have already helped around 16,000 Cordilleran OFWs who returned to the Philippines, saying that they had been given over P90 million financial assistance from the agency, other national line agencies, and local government units.


As reported by OWWA-CAR, prior OFW family day programs held in the provinces of Cordillera, OWWA-CAR has been conducting a series of capability-building activities on the six provinces of the Cordillera Administrative Region to strengthen the partnership with the Provincial Migrant Desk and PESO officers.


Likewise, awarding of various programs and services benefits for OFW and dependents specifically the distribution of the Tulong Pangkabuhayan sa Pag-unlad ng Samahang OFWs grants was also conducted.
