Tanudan farmers undergo contour farming techno-demo for sustainable corn production

Tanudan, Kalinga – To promote sustainable corn production, Dupligan corn farmers in Tanudan recently underwent a techno-demo on contour farming to help them counter soil erosion in slope areas while keeping the fertility of the soil.

According to Tanudan Agriculturist II, Salvador Balicao, when a slope is planted with pineapple and other plants, erosion of the topsoil that affects the fertility of the soil where corns are planted can be prevented.

Apart from protecting the soil, planting pineapple and other fruit trees could also be an additional source of income for the corn farmers.

The participants, who were mostly members of the Dupligan Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative, had a field day for the Sustainable Corn Production in Sloping Area(SCopSA) of the Department of Agriculture this October 13 learning to put the concept into practice.

The activity, he said, aimed to show the participants the effects of contour farming or planting pineapple or other fruit trees across the slope in preventing soil erosion.

“Daytoy a program iti Department of Agriculture ket i-demonstrate da nu kasatnu a mang-prevent ti erosion kadagitoy a rangrangkis a mamul-mulaan iti mais tapnu haan a dagus a ma-erode nu ma-maisen iti tattao,” he said.

“Once a makita da daytoy a klasen iti programa, siguro every farmer ket i-apply da iti farm da tapnu uray mabayag da nga agmamais, haan a bumaba diay fertility iti daga ken at the same time adda met iti daduma a source of income,” he explained.

This is the second techno-demo for the SCopSA program in Tanudan. The first one happened last year in Barangay Lay-asan.
