Tabuk City, Kalinga –Chairman of Committee on Indigenous Cultural Communities and Indigenous Peoples, Congressman Allen Jesse Mangaoang manifested his motions for the recognition of the significant role of indigenous women in national equation and as custodians of environment and natural resources.

During the committee meeting of Rural Development on November 15, Kalinga Lone District Representative Mangaoang highlighted the indigenous women’s traditional knowledge as highly regarded by the sacred beliefs of their ancestors. This, he said, creates an impact on forest conservation.

“IP women are custodians of culture, language, and beliefs. They are an integral part of the IP communities, helping to protect our natural resources and bravely facing the challenges of climate change,” underscored Mangaoang.

According to the congressman, IP women have greatly contributed to safeguarding 80 percent of the world’s remaining biodiversity.

To support his manifestation, Mangaoang cited six ways on how IPs, including the women folks, are helping the world achieve Zero Hunger based on United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization.

He pointed that IP’s traditional agricultural practices are resilient to climate change. They likewise conserve and restore forests and natural resources.

Further, indigenous foods expand and diversify diets; indigenous foods are resilient to climate change; indigenous territories hold 80 percent of the world’s biodiversity, and indigenous people’s lifestyles are locally adapted and respectful of natural resources.

For these reasons, Congressman Mangaoang manifested two motions. First, for the committee to “mention the crucial role of indigenous women in the national equation of rural women” in House Resolution 2125.

HR 2125 is entitled “A Resolution Enjoining the Expression of Solidarity of the House of Representatives through the Committee on Women and Gender Equality in the Observance of the United Nation’s International Day for Rural Women Every 15th of October Annually.”

The second is for the recognition of the “significant role of indigenous women as custodians of our environment and protecting our sources of food, nutrition, and health against the annual damages of natural disasters.”

Mangaoang, through his official Facebook page, reported that both manifestations were adopted by the committee.
