Tanudan, Kalinga – Soil samples of coffee plantations in Tanudan are currently being collected as part of the Municipal Local Government Unit’s move to study and address the decline in coffee production in the municipality.

Tanudan is known for being one of the top producers of quality coffee in the province. In 2019, The Asiw Farm in Pangol was hailed top 5 in Best Robusta Coffee during the Philippine Coffee Quality Competition.

For the past years, however, the Tanudan LGU through the Municipal Agricultural Office observed a decline in coffee production.

Municipal Agricultural Extension Worker, Abraham Canao said the LGU launched the collection of soil samples from different coffee plantation sites in the municipality in July 2022. This, he said, aims to trace the reasons behind the downturn in production.

As of August 15, about 85 samples were collected from Anggacan, Taloctoc, and Gaang.

Canao added that once they finish gathering the 200 target soil samples, they will start examining them to find out possible nutrient deficiencies.

“Tapnu ma ammuan ti nutrient deficiency ti kakapkapian gapwanan iti bigla nga panag-decline iti production. Tapnu kasta ket makita nu anya ti mai-recommend nga mai-supplement para mapaadu iti production iti kape ditoy Tanudan,” he said.

For this week, personnel from the Municipal Agricultural Office will collect soil samples from the plantation sites in Barangay Dacalan.
