Tabuk City, Kalinga―Over 20 yKalinga youth are serving as teachers to the pupils of Sitio Basao, Barangay Dilag every weekend as helpers to kids needing assistance in their distance education.

The group has also installed a library at the multi-purpose hall building of the barangay, to aid learners in answering their modules on their own.

According to Paulyn Ceralde, president of the Hope Alight, the volunteer work is in support of the Project Kalinawan which involve a workshop series and tutorial sessions. Project Kalinawan is a National Service Training Program (NSTP) Project of a group from University of the Philippines (UP)Diliman.

Ceralde added that the members of their group and other organizations convened for the community works to extend the learning of the children beyond their given modules.

“Considering that most of their parents haven’t gone to higher levels of education, the challenge nowis to make sure that the students are able to comprehend their lessons when the activity ends, that’s why we’re trying our best to teach them the basics of their subjects,” she said.

Moreover, Jim Bagano, member of the project’s core team, said he gives workshop on topics like digital literacy, photography, and other timely subjects that are relevant to the kids’ life. While on the tutorial activities, tutors use the kids’ modules as references.

With more than 20 pupils attending the workshop series and tutorial sessions, the activity is held every weekend which started in the beginning of May and will continue until May 30.

Project Kalinawan also hosts various activities like book drives, “Donate a Book for Tabuk: A Book Drive”, as part of their community- building advocacy.
