Baguio City, Philippines – The opening of the month-long 30th edition of Panagbenga drew an estimated 17,500 spectators, who enjoyed the colorful parade and enthusiastic performances on Sunday, February 1.

According to the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), the turnout is considered low compared to the expected 150,000 to 160,000 viewers for the Grand Street Dancing Parade on February 28 and the Grand Flower Float Parade on March 1.

With the cooperation of attendees and the deployment of more than 2,100 police officers, along with personnel from support units, fire services, LGUs, and volunteers, the event’s kickoff proceeded in an orderly and peaceful manner. No untoward incidents were recorded.

Prior to the parade, an interfaith prayer was held, attended by Congressman and Baguio Flower Festival Foundation Inc. (BFFFI) Chairman Emeritus Mauricio Domogan and various religious leaders. A traditional “cañao,” or feast, followed.

Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan, along with other officials and the BFFFI, led the parade, which commenced from Upper Session Road.

The lively beats and sharp formations of six school delegations competing in the drum and lyre competition, as well as 13 groups participating in cultural performances, brought the streets to life. Among the grade school contenders were Baguio Central School, El Tribu D’Lucban, Mabini Elementary School, Pugo Central School (La Union), Puguis Elementary School, and Tuba Central School (Benguet).

The participants marched and danced their way to Melvin Jones Grandstand, where they staged their culture-themed spectacles.

“Our theme, ‘Blooming Without End,’ is a statement of who we are—resilient, creative, disciplined, and committed to stewardship. Panagbenga has always been more than flowers; it is a living expression of Baguio’s identity,” said Olowan, who is currently serving as the City’s Acting Mayor.

The Panagbenga Scapes: A Garden Exhibit, which highlights landscaping designs, was also formally opened to the public.

Meanwhile, the BCPO assured the public that security will remain tight in key venues, especially with the expected influx of tourists during the upcoming street dance parade and flower float parade, where prominent figures are expected to attend.

The festival is set to conclude on March 8.
