New human Japanese encephalitis case recorded in Paracelis

Paracelis, Mt. Province – Municipal health officials reported a confirmed human case of the Japanese encephalitis virus in Paracelis on Friday, August 25.

Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV), according to the World Health Organization, is a flavivirus linked to dengue, yellow fever, and West Nile viruses, and is carried by mosquitoes.

The recent case was said to have no history of travel, trauma, or animal bites. It was only on August 19 that the positive confirmatory result was known.

Rannie Velasquez, an epidemiology assistant at MHO Paracelis, disclosed that the case involves an 11-year-old male.

This is now the third case of the vector-borne disease in the municipality. Two other cases were recorded in 2013 and 2022, both of which succumbed to the disease.

As to the new case, Velasquez disclosed that he is now recovering but is still under monitoring.

When asked if the disease is deadly, Velasquez said 20–30 percent of patients suffering from the disease typically die, and 30–50% of survivors have severe neuropsychiatric sequelae.

As to its symptoms, a patient may experience confusion, headaches, drowsiness, neck stiffness, and seizures.

In the case of the 11-year-old boy, symptoms include weakness on upper and lower limbs, cough, febrile episode, generalized body weakness, positive posturing and extension of limbs, non-conversant, headache, confusion, convulsions, involuntary movement of lower extremities, and altered sensorium.

“Anyone with symptoms should seek urgent medical care,” Paracelis MHO said.
